Tips on buying a wedding dress?

I want a killer wedding dress - like who doesn't? - but the prices out there are out of sight. I was wondering if anyone had any contacts or tips on where to shop for a wedding dress? With the economy the way it is I just can't justify spending a ton on a dress when the money could be used or saved for something else. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
